New Sports Betting Bill Introduced into Minnesota Senate

(Minnesota).- Minnesota Senators Nick Frentz and Matt Klein have introduced bill SB 3414, aiming to legalize mobile sports betting and daily fantasy sports for residents aged 21 and older.

New Sports Betting Bill Introduced into Minnesota Senate

The legislation ties these industries to the state's federally recognized tribes and designates the Minnesota Gambling Control Board as the regulator, with 11 mobile licenses available for 20 years and a 22% tax on operators. The bill proposes strict advertising rules to prevent terms like "free bets" and personalized promotions, aiming to curb problem gambling.

However, the tribal exclusivity of operator licenses has sparked controversy, with commercial operators and horse tracks opposing the proposal. Despite strong support among Minnesota residents, the lack of compromise over licensing rights continues to challenge the bill's progress.

While a similar measure is under review in the House, significant hurdles remain for the legalization efforts to move forward. Until the state can find a compromise, it's unlikely any sports betting legislation will make much headway.
